Season Summary 2011
"An amazing season was rounded off in superb
style as in four days Londesborough won the York and District Junior
League under 13’s cup with a victory over York followed up a couple
of days later by a league play-off semi final victory and finally
with a crushing victory in the play off final against Thixendale.
Fifteen matches, fifteen wins is a record of which to be very proud.
What’s more, no opposition side came close to challenging this very
talented team. This has indeed been a season for all those involved
to remember." George Drewery (Junior cricket coordinator).

Londesborough
Park Under 13 Champions
A splendid day at picturesque Bolton Percy saw
Londesborough Park under 13’s complete a league and cup double in
the York and District Junior League with a sweet victory over
spirited Thixendale.
Londesborough were indebted to skipper Nathan
Saltmer, who lead a strong bowling attack with five wickets for 17
runs, reducing Thixendale to 21 for 6 before they recovered to 72
all out, 33 short of Londesborough’s 105 for 2 in the allotted
twenty overs. Joe Shingles started the early Thixendale collapse
with a superb direct hit from wide long on to run out opener Matthew
Besford. Saltmer followed up immediately with a fiery spell to take
three wickets, including a fast Yorker which splayed the stumps of
Thixendale skipper Matt Proctor. Shingles’ very reliable left arm
swing accounted for two more Thixendale batsmen (both bowled) and
from a desperate position Thixendale were always unlikely to
recover.
So it proved, though Thixendale battled on
well, with Scott scoring an excellent 30 before enforced
retirement. A good catch from Lewis Medley at mid wicket was a
precursor to the final over in which Saltmer polished off the tail,
and Londesborough celebrations ensued.
Earlier, inserted Londesborough began steadily
in the face of tight bowling from Proctor and Besford. Openers
Jonty Atkinson and Ben Shingles took singles offered by a deep set
field and relished occasional boundaries. Both progressed to 30
before retiring. Saltmer and Harry Gamble pushed on but real
acceleration to a formidable total failed to materialise as
Thixendale fielded tenaciously and must have fancied their chances
at the break having scored 111 to win their semi final.
However it was not to be, as Londesborough
launched their formidable bowling attack, which proved to be
sufficient for a comfortable victory and completion of an unbeaten
season – played 15, won 15.
Londesborough
Park Under 13 Cup Winners
In a delayed York and District Junior League
cup final at Woodhouse Grange, Londesborough Park under 13’s
overcame a young York team by 34 runs, jubilantly to retain the
trophy.
Batting first Londesborough were again given a
solid if unspectacular start by reliable openers Ben Shingles and
Jonty Atkinson, with 45 on the board without loss after ten of the
allotted twenty overs and few problems. The pace then slackened
rather than increasing and Londesborough lost their way a little as
York fielded with verve and bowled accurately. Ben retired on 30,
Jonty was caught on 29 and talisman skipper Nathan Saltmer was
comprehensively bowled for a duck. The tempo was eventually
raised. Joe Shingles and Lewis Medley ran with urgency, including
an all run four of the last ball as Londesborough reached 97 for the
loss of two wickets.
York lost wickets early as Jonty bowled tightly
(three overs, one wicket for just two runs) and Nathan bowled with
too much pace for the batsmen to deal with, picking up 2 for 8 in
his four overs. Joe Shingles at first change added three wickets as
York crumbled to 19 for 5 before recovering to make 64.
Londesborough’s fielding was also top notch. Toby Stephenson threw
in with power from deep mid off for Matthew Richardson to complete a
run out and six catches were held, two by ‘keeper Owen Raper
including one off a thick edge standing up to Shingles. York
competed well to the end but could not threaten the Londesborough
total. Charlie Cartwright completed the match with a deserved
wicket in the last over.

The Park's under 13s season improves by the week as they completed
their league fixtures as champions with a 100% record. They now
face close rivals Dunnington in the play off semi-final on 19th
July.
The penultimate league fixture produced a convincing win against
Selby. New opener Charlie Cartwright dominated the batting with Ben
Shingles, scoring 30 before retiring, whilst the remaining batsmen
all chipped in towards a total of 99-4. The Selby reply failed to
materialize as wickets for Nathan Saltmer, Cartwright, Angus Field
and Phil Mitchell restricted the opposition to 50-5.
In the final league encounter Woodhouse Grange chose to bat first
but were soon on the back foot as Saltmer and Joe Shingles reduced
them to 6-3. Danger man Tom Stubley contributed 15 before being
brilliantly caught in mid air by Jonty Atkinson and, despite a below
par display in the field, Woodhouse were limited to 63-8. Atkinson
(31) and Ben Shingles (23) comfortably saw the Park home without
loss.
A
strong Malton and Norton side provided the opposition in the cup
semi-final. The Park required 80 for victory following a good
session in the field, Nathan Saltmer picking up 3 wickets and a
stellar performance from Owen behind the sticks restricting the
extras contribution to just 3 runs. In reply Charlie Cartwright and
Ben Shingles produced a solid start, Saltmer accelerated the rate
with some excellent boundaries and Owen Raper (13 no) and Joe
Shingles (20 no) secured a cup final appearance at York against
Woodhouse Grange on 21st July.
The under 13s continued their unbeaten season in a friendly fixture
against Pocklington in which some of the squad who don't play
regularly had an opportunity to shine. The Park totalled 102-3 with
Cartwright retiring on 30 and James Laudage compiling an unbeaten
23. Another solid display in the field saw Pocklington dismissed
for 62.
As ever, thanks to the continued support for the juniors from The
Star Inn, Sancton.
On Sunday Londesborough Park staged its inaugural 'Non Cricketers'
6-a-Side Competition. Despite the inclement weather conditions the
organisers, umpires, scorers and players battled through the rain
and almost completed the group stages until the sight of one too
many 'drowned rats' caused cessation of play. Events may be drawn
to a conclusion this Sunday morning.
Credit to all those who stuck it out, which was appreciated by the
competitors, and whose efforts help to bolster club funds once
again.
(06th July 2011)
Played 10 won 10, it doesn't get much better for the Park's under
13s, the only undefeated side in the York & District Junior League.
The league match against Bishopthorpe saw the Park accumulate 114-4
with Tommy Hudson, Ben Shingles, Nathan Saltmer, Angus Field and
Lewis Medley all in the runs. The reply never threatened as the
Park's fielding was at its best. A direct hit by Hudson started the
rot, followed by excellent catches by Field, Ben and Toby Stephenson
providing the Stephenson cousins with a share of 5 wickets.
Bishopthorpe's total of 30 told its own story.
The same opposition was again put to the sword in the cup match.
Ben Shingles and Harry Gamble batted well against a good opening
attack. Nathan racked up another 30 and Charlie Cartwright
contributed a valuable 20 at the death. Joe Shingles, with a record
6-3, proved far too much for the home batsmen as they subsided to
29-8. A trip to Malton & Norton awaits in the next round.
A
weakened Yapham side was the next to suffer. Ben, Nathan and Jonty
Atkinson produced the bulk of the Park's 120-3. The visitors were
reduced to 3-6 and eventually accumulated 25 as Ben took 3-0 and
keeper Owen continued to perform with style behind the sticks.
Thanks as ever to the
Star Inn, Sancton for their generous sponsorship of the Park's
junior section.
(1st July 2011)
The Park U13's remain unbeaten following victories against Selby,
Ovington and Stamford Bridge. The youngsters amassed 137-1 against
Selby with Harry Gamble, Ben Shingles, Nathan Saltmer and Jonty
Atkinson all in the runs. All the bowlers performed well in
restricting Selby to 56-6.
Against Stamford a pitch with low bounce made batting difficult.
Joe Shingles batted with great maturity, Harry Gamble pitched in
with 32 and Lewis Medley finished with a flurry as the Park totalled
109-5. Stamford had no answer to the bowling of Joe Shingles,
Charlie Cartwright, debutant Tom Armstrong and Rory and Toby
Stephenson. Six batsmen failed to register as the Bridge were
rolled over for 35.
In the cup a stuttering start against Ovington saw the Park reduced
to 22-3 before Nathan Saltmer and Joe Shingles produced unbeaten 30s
in a final tally of 118-8. Miserly spells from all the bowlers
prevented Ovington from mounting a serious threat as Matthew
Richardson picked up two wickets at the death to restrict the
opposition to 62-7 and ensure progress to the next round against
Bishopthorpe.
Nathan Saltmer, Ben and Joe Shingles all excelled themselves for
East Yorkshire in 3 games over the recent half term, resulting in
Nathan and Ben being selected for the full Yorkshire trial. In
addition Harry, Lewis, Toby and Jonty have all recently represented
East Yorkshire at under 12 level. Congratulations to all the
players.
(June 2011)
The Park's under13s have emulated their senior 2nd XI
counterparts as they remain undefeated. Their first outing produced
a victory, albeit not an easy one, against York B. Ben and Joe
Shingles held the batting together in a total of 83-6 whilst Joe,
Jonty Atkinson and Lewis Medley were the pick of the bowlers.
The best performance of the season thus far was reserved for the
fixture against Woodhouse Grange. Ben Shingles(22), Nathan Saltmer
(35 retired, including two 6s and four 4s), Angus Field (26 no) and
Joe Shingles (15 no) ensured the Park posted a very competitive
136-3. Woodhouse were never in the hunt as they replied with
53-5.
In the cup the Park restricted Dunnington to 69-5 including a fair
smattering of extras due to a wet ball. Charlie Cartwright bowled
tidily whilst spinners Phil 'Chinaman' Mitchell and Ben Shingles
applied the brakes, assisted by excellent run outs by Nathan Saltmer
and Toby Stephenson and a sharp stumping from Billy Salmon. The
Park's reply reached 32-1 courtesy of Harry Gamble and Saltmer
before the groundsman intervened and called a halt to proceedings in
the rain. The Park progress to round 2 after Dunnington conceded
the fixture.
