In
sharp contrast the 2nd XI enjoyed a wonderful start to the
season in their home fixture against Hornsea 2nd XI. Michael
Drewery and James Hanley opened the innings in immaculately prepared
surroundings with not a rabbit in sight. After the departure of Drewery
for 13 Hanley and James Beevers laid the platform for a big score,
stroking the ball to all corners in a partnership of 85. Hanley
achieved his 50 before departing but new batsman Sam Medley maintained
the momentum. Beevers was bowled for a well earned 46, to be replaced
by Dan 'the man' Howard. Medley (62) and Howard (63) then plundered the
Hornsea attack with 19 boundaries in a partnership of 121 for the 4th
wicket. The innings finally closed on 274 for 5.
The
usual high class home made tea clearly boosted the Hornsea openers as
they posted 42 for the first wicket, Hornby returning to the hutch with
32 to his name. However that was as good as it got for the visitors as
42 for 1 became 45 for 6 in no time, Dan 'the man' being the chief
destroyer with 4-4 from just 3 overs. Skipper Jonathan Croft took the
opportunity to share out the bowling duties, the main beneficiary being
youngster Jack Sowersby with 5-20 whilst Beevers and Hanley backed up
their success with the bat with tidy spells and young keeper Chris
Mitchell had a promising debut.
The
2nds' next encounter is against Osbaldwick when they will be hoping to
build on this impressive start.
