The
2nd XI's potential championship credentials were put to a
severe test against bottom of the pile Dringhouses 2nd XI but
they are made of strong stuff and eventually came out on top with a
narrow 2 wicket victory.
Dringhouses took first knock and, although scoring at a brisk pace, lost
a steady stream of wickets as Rob Sawyer and Ben Lewis made inroads.
The Red Lion sponsored Park looked set for an early attack on the
butties as the visitors were reduced to 112-7 but Smith (60) and
Gilmartin (23) had failed to read the script, adding 72 for the 8th
wicket. The visitors eventually mustered a challenging 187-9 despite
the best efforts of Lewis with 4-51.
The
Park's reply lost the services of Lewis (13) but Tim Stephenson (29) and
Tom Williamson (40) eased the score to 82-1 at the first drinks break.
The dismissal of both batsmen shortly afterwards put the Park in a spin
as 6 wickets fell for the addition of just 33 runs. With the lower
order rarely having to don the pads this season the pressure was on.
Liam Barlow (25 no) struck some lusty blows to good effect and the
'flashing blade' of senior pro George Drewery (22) came to the rescue,
seeing the Park home for the loss of 8 wickets with 4 overs to spare.
A
test of character for the twos who came out smelling of roses and remain
41 points clear at the top of division 6. Top performance from umpire
Botts who stood at both ends and thanks to M W Farm Supplies for
sponsoring the match ball (further ball sponsors for the 2nd
XI gratefully received – contact Steve Dodd for details: 01430 871768).
