The
Red Lion sponsored 2nd XI just failed to register their 5th
straight win as they matched up against Dunnington 2nd XI,
another team intent on giving youngsters a chance of competitive league
cricket.
Park
openers Michael Drewery and Sam Dodd soon had the scorers earning their
keep, rattling up 78 in 13 overs with the assistance of a lightening
quick outfield before Drewery returned to the sheds with 36 to his
name. The loss of 4 further wickets for the addition of 26, including
Dodd for 57, swung the balance firmly in favour of Dunnington. Having
not seen much action thus far this season the middle order needed to
step up to the plate and were ably lead by skipper Jonathan Croft who
held the remainder of the innings together with support from Tom Eagling
(14) and Liam Barlow 17) to secure a competitive total of 212, Croft
finishing undefeated on 69. Sam Tattersall was the pick of the
opposition's bowlers with 4-29.
The
Park made a perfect start after the tea interval, Robbie Sawyer's first
delivery aimed straight at Croft who duly took the catch. Experienced
campaigner Steve Young (32) joined Tom Wilson and kept the board ticking
as Dunnington's reply stood at a promising 90 for 2 at the drinks
break. The old adage of drinks bringing a wicket held true as Ben Lewis
immediately removed Wilson for 22. Lewis delivered 12 tight overs and
Sawyer returned to the action to remove the middle order. Robbie earned
a 5 wicket haul courtesy of a blinding one handed catch at first slip by
Michael Drewery. However, despite the Park's best efforts a 9th
wicket partnership of 45 denied them another victory.
The
match ball was kindly sponsored by Oaklea Nurseries and the 2nd
XI will look to plant their early season domination against TABS on
Saturday.
