The
wonderful British summer weather put paid to Londesborough Park 1st
XI's fixture against Malton & Old Malton last Saturday but the rain
failed to thwart the seconds who, thanks to the sterling efforts of Phil
High, managed to stage their home game against Osbaldwick 2nd
XI.
The
contest was reduced to 37 overs per side and opposing skipper Steve
Smith had little hesitation in inviting the Red Lion sponsored Park to
bat on winning the toss. A youthful bowling attack made Tim Stephenson
and James Hanley work hard for their runs in a partnership of 34, ended
when Hanley was bowled for 11. Despite cameos from Dan 'the man' Howard
(12) and Michael Drewery (14) no batsman other than Stephenson, who
crafted a stylish 58, could master the proficient bowling and fielding
of the visitors as the Park's innings subsided to a moderate 130 all
out. Burton claimed the bowling accolades for the visitors with 3-31.
The
Park's opening attack of Rob Sawyer and and Tom Sowersby kept a tight
rein on Osbaldwick's reply, taking wickets at regular intervals, as only
Steve Horner offered any meaningful resistance. Following Rob's 10 over
spell which returned 2-31 and Tom's 3-6 from 7 overs, the batsmen gained
little respite as the under 14s duo of Stephen Croft and James Hanley
continued to apply the pressure. Team mates supported well in the field
and stand in keeper Steve Dawson chipped in with a good catch and
stumping as Croft's spin bamboozled the lower order. Opener Horner (26)
was finally trapped LBW by Croft who finished with 5-17 as the visitors
capitulated to 69 all out.
Thanks to Nigel 'Dickie' Botting who once again had the 'dubious'
pleasure of umpiring at both ends throughout and to match ball sponsor M
W Windows. The Park stole an important march on nearest rivals
Dunnington, whose fixture was a victim of the weather, and now stand
clear at the top of division 6 with a 62 point advantage and 7 games
remaining – keep it going boys!
Londesborough Park 2nd XI 130 (T Stephenson 58, A Burton
3-31) Osbaldwick 2nd XI 69 (S Horner 26, S Croft 5-17, T
Sowersby 3-6).
